Maker: Ralph & James Clews Maker's Mark: Description: The view on this earthenware plate also appears on a 9 inch soup, a 10.75 inch platter and a 7.5 inch bowl. The more common name used for this series is America and Independence, due to those words appearing on the plate. The Armans have numbered the views in this series from 2 to 15 (the number 1 being another series) and this view is No.5. The central pattern on this example is taken from the source print shown below. Prior to discovery of the source prints that Clews used for these patterns, researchers David and Linda Arman endeavored to provide descriptive names for them. The Armans named this scene Building, Sheep on Lawn. |
