Description:

There are two versions of this earthenware cup plate, one with full border on which the names of the States are legible, and one with a partial border on which most of the states' names are cut off. (see additional image). The more common name used for this series is America and Independence, due to those words appearing on the plate. This is No.7 in Arman's numbering system.

The central pattern on this example is taken from the source print shown below.   Prior to discovery of the source prints that Clews used for these patterns, researchers David and Linda Arman endeavored to provide descriptive names for them.  The Armans named this scene Three Story Mansion, Small Extension to Left.
