A ribbon to the top of the plate is inscribed in Old English type 'A Merry Christmas to you', the ribbon at the bottom is inscribed 'And a Happy New Year'. The diamond registration mark tells us that the design was registered on October 26th 1867 and it was probably intended for the Christmas market that year, though being undated would be suitable for several more Christmasses. |
