Description:

An earthenware plate printed in blue in the Italian pattern.  Spode introduced this very popular pattern in 1816, and an example of the Spode design is also included in this exhibition.  There are only a few variations in Mare's version of the pattern from the original Spode design.  This example is exhibited because of the blue printed mark on the back.  This mark serves as testimony to the fact that John Mare was one of the potters who used the high quality blue pigment prepared for transfer printing by the Bristol Cobalt Smelting Company.
