Printing on porcelain 1750-1800
|
Shape Type: Dinner & Dessert Wares Pattern Type: Literature, Classical, Mythology, and the Arts Date: 1755-57 Dimensions:
Maker: Bow Description: This round soft paste porcelain plate is printed in Venitian red in a scene of Aeneas and Anchises fleeing the burning city of Troy. The trefoil border is hand enameled in a similar color. The design is after a print by Hubert Gravelot, found on page 67 of The Complete Drawing Book, 3rd edition, 1762. A Worcester porcelain mug with a similar print in collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (C.83-1939) has some authorities suggesting that the engraving was done by Robert Hancock. |
