Description:

Tile, part of panel of six tiles, earthenware, printed with a repeat design in greyish-blue on green with stylised birds, lilies, leaves and stems and roses. Mark on reverse on three tiles: "MAW / BENTHALL WORKS FLOREAT SALOPIA / (in a circle) / JACKFIELD / SALOP".  dated 1900. The stylised flora and fauna depicted on this tile panel takes inspiration from the designs of the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau, relating to furnishing and wallpaper designs by companies such as Morris & Co.

Aside from Mintons, Maw & Co. were one of the most successful factories producing tiles.  Production was established at Benthall Works, Broseley, nr. Jackfield, Shropshire from 1852-83, then at Jackfield until 1969.
