Calcut China Manufactory (Maker)

The Calcut China Manufactory was operated in the Jackfield area of Shropshire.  Known for its ironworks, Jackfield was also home to a number of different kinds of ceramic manufactories.  Only a few documentary references survive to the Calcut (or Calcutt) factory which indicate it was in production by December 1794 and within two years or so was subsumed into John Rose’s new porcelain venture at nearby Coalport.

Currently researchers believe that an English soft-paste porcelain was produced using soap-rock in the recipe.  Teawares, mugs and jugs have been attributed to the factory and a range of underglaze blue printed designs have been identified alongside overglaze painted patterns.
