Meakin (Maker)

1Alfred Meakin was the brother of James and George Meakin who were major potters in the town of Hanley.  Alfred set up on his account in Tunstall, where he is listed in Keates Directory of 1875 at the Royal Albert Pottery.  By the 1890s the firm occupied two factories and had begun to make tiles alongside their regular production of tableware.  Although the company was bought out in 1908 it continued to operate under the Alfred Meakin name until 1976.
