Worker's Mark: Description: A dessert dish printed in blue with gilded decoration added. This example does not include the inner border found on many Minton pieces in this pattern. Copied from a Chinese original pattern dated c.1790 (see below). Geoffrey Priestman in An Illustrated Guide to Minton Printed Pottery 1796-1836 documents the factory name as Hermit, based on invoices retained in the Minton archives. This example is recorded as Minton and is version II of the Hermit pattern. Unmarked examples are found as well as marked pieces in this pattern by Don Pottery, Geddes, T & J Hollins, Stevenson, and Swansea, dating from c.1805-1820. Frank Davenport and Martha Wolf, in NCS Newsletter No. 121, March 2001, p. 25, provide comparisons of variations in pattern that aid in identifying the maker. |
