Description:

Pearlware jug made amd printed in puce at the Herculaneum Pottery, Toxteth, Liverpool. The print of the farmyard is one found on 18th century wares, and bears the faint signature of Joseph Johnson. This Liverpool printer seems to have died in 1805, too early to have printed this jug. The Herculaneum Pottery must therefore have acquired his engraved copper-plate and continued to use it, without bothering to erase his signature. Such plates were valuable assets, and changed hands when printers and potters went out of business.
