Maker: Richard Champion's Bristol

Description:

This Bristol hard paste porcelain jug is printed in black enamel with La Dame Chinoise and, on the reverse side, Battledore and Shuttlecock.  Both these designs were used on early Worcester porcelain and the former is also found in underglaze blue at Bow and Derby.  It is not certain that the small number of overglaze printed patterns found on Champion's Bristol porcelain were applied at the factory.  There is no technical reason why they should not have been, particularly as the more difficult technique of printing in underglaze blue was carried out there.
