Description:

Flight and Barr, Worcester, mug printed with the figure of Peace, inscribed 'They that love Peace shall prosper' and 'Preliminaries of PEACE signed October 1, 1801'. The Peace of Amiens, a brief interval in the Napoleonic Wars between Britain and France, was signed in March 1802. Britain's negotiator Lord Cornwallis went to Paris in November 1801 to negotiate the final terms, and this mug must date from between October and March. It is therefore important as a datable example of early stipple engraving on ceramics: see especially the other side.
