Description:

In spite of being fairly large, this 14 inch earthenware vegetable dish only had room inside for 10 of the 15 states' names.  This is true of smaller examples in this series where as few as five of the names are printed. This is No. 12 in the Arman's numbering system and the view that appears on this dish is also found on several sizes of platters, an under tray, a pitcher and two sizes of bowls, including a large wash bowl. 

The central pattern on this example is taken from the source print shown below.   Prior to discovery of the source prints that Clews used for these patterns, researchers David and Linda Arman endeavored to provide descriptive names for them.  The Armans named this scene Mansion, small Boat with Flag in Foreground.
