The original Norman castle on the site was rebuilt by the Neville family in the 14th century. The castle was confiscated by the Crown in 1569 after the Nevilles participated in the Rising of the North, a revolt of Catholic nobility in northern England that sought to depose Elizabeth I and place Mary, Queen of Scots on the English throne. The present castle is largely a restoration from the 1820s, with more work done later in the 19th century. |
