Overglaze
Printing on Earthenware and Stoneware 1800-1900
Additional Image:
The other side printed with "Euryclea discovers Ulysses". The recognition of Ulysses (Odysseus) by his old nurse comes from much later in the Odyssey. The choice of these two disconnected episodes from a very long story to illustrate this vase suggests that whoever chose them did not know the story. The prints were copied from John Flaxman's illustrations to the Odyssey, which were reprinted many times after their first publication in 1793.
Each scene is neatly labelled underneath.
