This pickle dish is decorated with a very rare print dating from the very early period of underglaze blue printing at Worcester. The print is not recorded in Braynan, French and Sandon's book on blue and white Worcester but an unglazed shard showing the print was excavated on the Worcester site. This shard is shown in the Watney sale catalog at lot 194 along with a matching pickle dish. Like the present example the printing on the Watney pickle dish is slightly blurred, perhaps indicting technical problems. The catalog entry identifies the print as the Bamboo Billboards. However, there are a number of differences between that pattern and the one on this leaf dish and the one in the Watney sale. This pattern therefore needs a separate name.
