Hot Press Printing

The purpose of heating the oil and copper was to encourage the sticky mixture to flow into the engraved lines of the metal printing plate. The method was first used for printing overglaze, either with a mixture that was mostly pigment or one that was mostly oil.

Within a few years it was also used for underglaze printing. This means printing before the pots are dipped in glaze and put in the kiln to fire the glaze.
