Description:
An octagonal-shaped earthenware jug printed in black with the named pattern Cuba. The pattern name suggesting a Caribbean setting does not appear to correspond with the Chalet style building featured in this romantic landscape. The pattern is the same on both sides. The border consists of a band of scrolls, strawberries, roses, and foliage around both the inner and outer border. The size is unknown. W.J. Grant-Davidson, The Pottery of South Wales, p. 297, notes that the pattern was engraved by Elijah H. Brindley and called Cuba after the Cuban firm of consignees of Swansea wares, Agacio Velez y Ca. The copperplate with the marks of Dillwyn & Co. and Evans & Glasson, together with the name of Agacio Velez y Ca. may be seen in the Swansea Museum.
