The exterior of this thinly potted Liverpool porcelain sauceboat has basket-weave moulded decoration enclosing reserves.  These are printed with a series of floral sprays.  These prints are known as the Early Floral Sprays and seem to be exclusive to James Pennington.  Further prints from the series decorate the interior of the sauceboat. James Pennington may have been the first Liverpool porcelain maker to employ printing in underglaze blue but he made little use of the process and surviving examples are now rare
