This plate is of deep section. It is too small to be a soup plate and may be a pudding dish. It is printed with a pattern, known as the Conversation. The same name is also applied to a different chinoiserie landscape pattern. including two men on a bridge. that is mainly found on earthenware. The Conversation pattern seen here is quite a rare pattern on Caughley porcelain, where it is usually found on teawares, mugs and mask jugs. Its use on these small plates is particularly rare. These have their own dedicated printed border, different to the border pattern used with the Conversation on other Caughley wares. This pattern involves some washing in by hand and this explains why the "S" mark is painted.
