Description:
This Bow jug is printed in overglaze red with Blind Man's Buff (shown here), Marbles and Battledore and Shuttlecock. These prints are based on engravings of about 1750 by Jacques Bacheley after designs by Gravelot. These designs also appear on Worcester porcelain. This series of prints of Youthful Diversions is discussed by Cyril Cook in ECC Transactions 3 (1). He attributed the engravings of these designs that were used on porcelain to Robert Hancock. Cook also suggested that Hancock took some copper plates from the series with him when he went to Caughley about 1775, this accounting for their use on an early 19th century Coalport loving cup in conjunction with Hancock's engraving of George II. The painted floral border is also known on a Bow bowl in the British Museum that is dated 1754.
