The view printed on this small earthenware platter also appears on many forms: a soup tureen, a pitcher, a handled dish, a washbowl, various sized pitchers, and two sizes of vegetable dishes with their covers. The outer row of states names are on the outer edge. Note that there are 15 states names, representing the first 15 states in the Union. The more common name used for this series is America and Independence, due to those words appearing on the plate. Arman has numbered the views in this series from 2 to 15 and this view is No. 11. The central pattern on this example is taken from the source print shown below. Prior to discovery of the source prints that Clews used for these patterns, researchers David and Linda Arman endeavored to provide descriptive names for them. The Armans named this scene Castle with Flag, Boats in Foreground.
