Description:

A large molded earthenware soup tureen with cover printed in blue in a Chinoiserie revival pattern named by the pottery as Ceylon Temple.  Prior to the discovery of an example with the pattern name printed on it, the design had been referred to as Floral Horse.  The maker of this pattern is unknown, however, at least one example is known with a printed retailer's mark of "D Davis, Commercial Road, London". The fact that Daniel Davis established his business in 1839, aids collectors in dating this pattern. While examples of this pattern are found from time to time on dinner wares, the only documented example of the design with the printed name Ceylon Temple is the plate shown below.
